R-O-T-O-V-I-R-U-S, rotovirus is its nameO!

So excited to be back home and be able to roll around on the floor!
Trying to hold in her excitement, pic after discharge orders!

Daddy took home Avery's pjs and didn't bring something back for her to wear home so she is wearing a paper gown they gave us! CHIC, I know!

Her first real bottle with formula!

SOME RANDOM pics from the week before:

Helping mommy fold the towels!

Where's Avery?

Modeling her bathing suite!

Gotta love it!

This past week was absolutely horrible! Last Tuesday morning Avery drank her normal bottle and then about a half an hour later spit up. I just thought at the time it was a little more than normal but nothing to be alarmed about. Later that morning I hopped into the shower, while Avery played around in her exersaucer. I got out of the shower and walked into our bedroom and was immediately hit with a cloud of stench. Now remember, I am a nurse, I can handle MOST smells, but this smell made me want to turn around and run back to the toilet and hurl! Avery has NEVER had diarrhea and this was diarrhea of all diarrhea, all moms know what I mean. I wasn't too sure if the smell that accompanied the treat in her diaper was normal for diarrhea or not, thought to myself maybe she was teething or something. Around lunchtime I started to feed Avery a jar of baby food squash. She normally can eat a whole jar and then some, but almost to the bottom of the jar she starting PROJECTILE vomiting, all over momma, and everything that was in her path. I was stunned, I didn't know what to do first, clean her up, clean me up, so I called Brian!! I asked him to take an early lunch and grab me some pedialyte and head home. So to make a long story short, for the next couple of days she ate little, refused pedialyte in any flavor or vessel we offered it in, diarrhea continued. I felt awful for her. I called her pediatricians office, which they really were no help, researched things online what to do for her. Thursday night we had just finished dinner and we were feeding Avery a bottle right before putting her down for bed and I handed her to Brian so I could get situated on the couch and soon after him picking her up she puked all over daddy! (thankfully missing our new couches)! After that Brian TOLD me that we were taking her to the ER. After daddy and Avery cleaned up we headed to the ER. We got there at 8:45 pm, and around midnight they finally got us back to a room, waited for another half hour, talked to a doctor for fifteen seconds, nurse comes in, states that they need to get some blood and start her on an IV. It took three nurses and three sticks before they were able to get a good line, I about lost it watching my baby being turned into a pin cushion, but after a little love, she acted like nothing previously had happened. Such a trooper. Around 3:30 am the doctor comes in and tells us that it was a good thing we brought her in when we did bc she was severely dehydrated and that she was needing to be admitted to the hospital! UGH!, so at 5:30am we finally got up to the pediatrics floor, got situated, nurse assessed her, got a short nap. The doctor never told us what was going on with her, but after a stool culture, the morning nurse informed us that she had ROTOVIRUS, which is basically gastroenteritis but for babies. She weighed 16 lb 9 oz at her check up the Monday before and on admission she weighed 15 lb 3 oz! She was only allowed pedialyte to drink which she hated and we felt so guilty eating and drinking in front of her! We are such bad parents:( Brian's job was awesome and understanding, we both stayed up at the hospital til Sunday evening when we were discharged! She is eating and drinking and her bottom doesn't look like ground hamburger meat anymore, we felt so bad for her! She had an appt on Tuesday and she now weighs in at a hefty 15lb 6 oz! The doctor gave her a clean bill of health and said she is looking good and that rotovirus is going around down here and to be careful what she touches when we are out and about...I hope that is our last hospitalization with her and the next child(ren) to come...that was enough to last us a lifetime! But we are so thankful that she is doing well.

That is awful! Drew had the same thing (twice within a few months time) a few years ago (I think he was a little older than Avery) and you are so correct - it is awful on all involved. We were fortunate that it didn't get bad enough for Drew to be hospitalized. However, he was nice enough to pass on the virus to me and Chris. Thanks. We felt so awful and had zero energy for about 3 days. I can only imagine how little ones must feel! I 'm so glad she is doing better!!
